Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Aren’t safety razors old fashioned?
A. When Mr Gillette invented a safety razor with disposable blades in 1901; he took the shaving world by storm. In the 1980s the razor manufacturers changed the purchase model from a quality razor with cheap replacement blades to a semi-disposable razor and expensive consumable blades. A modern (or vintage) safety razor will give you a great shave and will last a lifetime. They can also look ultra modern, or classically retro – stylishly old or ultra modern, but never old fashioned, take a look at all of the models in the Safety Razors category in our catalogue.
Q. Won’t I cut my face using a Safety Razor?
A. You may get the odd nick until you get used to the razor and the method of shaving, but after a few days, you’ll find that shaving is more enjoyable, you get a closer shave and no nicks. If you do get a cut, have a Styptic Pencil handy – it’ll stop the bleeding immediately. You can buy these in the Shaving Accessories area of the shop on this site.
Q. What are the best blades?
A. Any replacement blades sold on this site are of the highest quality – the make of blade that you prefer really depends on trying the different ones. I find that Derby blades are best for me, but I’m left-handed, others may find that another make suits them better. What we would advise if to buy a selection in single packs, then when you find your preferred blade, buy them in packs of 10 or 20 (50 or 100 blades) to save even more money.
Q. Should I use Aerosol Foam or Gel, Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream?
A. I prefer a good quality soap in a bowl or a shaving cream. Aerosol foams and gels don’t last long and are pretty bad for the environment too. A good quality soap or cream will also leave your skin feeling much better.
Q. Do I need a Shaving Brush?
A. If you choose to use a shaving soap or cream, you will need a shaving brush. A drying stand is also a good idea, but not essential. Any of the brushes sold on this site are of excellent quality.
Q. You sell vintage safety razors as well as new ones and state that they make great shaving razors – isn’t it unhygienic to use a second-hand razor?
A. Every vintage razor sold on safetyrazors.co.uk (unless otherwise stated) is ultrasonically cleaned, sterilised using a professional Ultraviolet sterilizer to remove any bacteria and then finally polished. If a vintage razor shows signs of plating wear, it is professionally replated.
